Each summer the folks at Jolly Lane Greenhouse in Rapid City
pull a rusted-out, 1935 International Truck in front of their store.
They load the back with flowers and grasses and it is just such a
joy to view. I made a pilgrimage in August, 2004, just to take
pictures; I was sure it would make a splendid watercolor.
I drew the truck with technical pens and filled in with a bit of
watercolor pencils. The owners of Jolly Lane Greenhouse asked
for a print of the painting and ordered a set of cards. I asked their
permission to print up my own cards and now you can have them
too. I call it "Gone to Seed".
This led to a commission for Christmas Cards. I used my
computer to remove the flowers and replace them with Christmas
greens. Same truck, with a new load, called "Holiday Delivery".
However, the Jolly Lane had an even better idea using real
horsepower
(see the Horsepower Series)
.
MEANWHILE, one day as I drove home I saw this
amazing 1925 Ford Truck sitting in my neighbors’
driveway. He only has three wheels and one headlight, but I was
smitten. I immediately got pictures and began work on
"Gone to Seed, too".
I made a second drawing of the Ford truck in October, so
naturally I decided to add a few pumpkins. To go along with the
series, I named it "Pumpkin Delivery".
I have several more trucks in my files and I am always looking for
more, so check back to see what I get drawn this next year. Do
you have a great old truck that has “gone to seed”? Maybe you
would like me to draw it up.
