South Dakota poet and illustrator plan signing events

The creators of A Prairie Prayer will be signing copies of the newly-released book at several South Dakota locations this year. First stop is Watertown, South Dakota - hometown of the illustrator Marie Louise Tesch. Poet-rancher Bruce Roseland will join her at the Codington County Historic Museum on Thursday, July 3, from 1-3 p.m. The museum is located at the corner of Maple and 1st Avenue, just north of the county courthouse. Partial proceeds of the book sales will benefit the museum.

A Prairie Prayer is a slim volume of poems like it’s predecessor The Last Buffalo. That first work by Roseland won the 2007 Western Heritage Wrangler Award presented by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma. Roseland, a fourth-generation rancher, uses poetry to describe modern ranch life with an appreciation for the past and a wry wit honed by the lonely winds of the prairie.

"People living in this part of the country, in particular, can be thankful for the kind of record Bruce Roseland has provided," writes critic Mark Vinz. "Readers everywhere can appreciate these thoroughly human perspectives and their celebration of the prairie land and people."

In September the pair will meet up in western South Dakota. During the month of September the original drawings by Tesch will be on display at the Spearfish Art Center Gallery, 612 Main Street, in downtown Spearfish. On Thursday, September 25, the gallery is hosting a reception with refreshments, readings by Roseland and music by Tesch from 4 -7 p.m.

The following weekend, September 27 & 28, the pair will be at the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival in Custer State Park.

Roseland and Tesch will both be selling and signing books at these special events. If you are unable to attend, please purchase copies at your local bookstore or you can call directly to the publisher, the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies at 701-231-7857.
